Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
“One child, one teacher, one book, one pen can change the world.” -Malala Yousafzai
With 20 years of tutoring and teaching experience, working with a wide range of students with varying abilities and needs, I offer services in reading, writing, core school subjects, ESL, personal developement, coaching and time management.
An initial phone consultation between one or both parents and myself provides any background information, problematic areas, subject matter and student skills before the first tutoring session. Please prepare any specific questions you may have.
All students enroll in an hour long tutoring session to begin with. Age plays largely into how the following sessions will be structured as younger learners often need more frequent breaks. Often movement activities related to the academic work can be useful as well.
Follow up consultations/communiques with parents at the end of the tutoring sessions provide feedback and insight into the student's work, habits and progress. I will also take time to review the student’s assignments and prepare for the subsequent session.
Students with disabilities are welcomed and encouraged to enroll in tutoring. My own repertoire includes work with students with Autism, Asperger’s, Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, delayed reading skills/reading readyness and other specific learning delays
Additionally when adult learners seek to further their skills, the thought of finding time to set aside from work and family responsibilities can be daunting. Rest assured that sessions are flexible and can be held online, at home, school, library, or even a nearby café.
Please do not hesitate to contact me in regards to your specific goals. Tutoring is a personal approach to learning by the very nature of the one-on-one sessions and can essentially be tailored to anyone’s learning style.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Pursuing a Doctorate in Educational Leadership
Master’s Degree in Education
TESOL Certification (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages)
Graduate Training: Montessori Education
Bachelor's degree in Art History and Photography
WSI Red Cross Certification (Water Safety Instructor)
How did you get started teaching?
I come from a long line of teachers. My mother was a teacher. My grandmother was a teacher. My sister teaches. So does my Aunt and several of my cousins. Even my best friend since high school is a teacher. I am, and really have always known, that I would be a teacher.
As the eldest growing up, I always helped my little sisters. My first teaching job other than the arts and crafts lesson or homework help I would give while babysitting was as a swim instructor. I still love to swim to this day and provide coaching and swim lessons as well.
COVID-19 update: At this time all tutoring sessions will be provided virtually, either online or via phone/email communication. While video chat programs such as Zoom or Skype may be used, they are not necessisary or conducive for all types of tutoring sessions.
