About

I enjoy using math in my life and work. Still, I often struggled during math class because I didn't understand why concepts mattered or how they fit together. Once I made those connections, math started to click.

The experience has given me a passion for helping others make sense of abstract concepts. It has also made me an effective tutor, finding new ways to explain and connect information to help students.

Everyone can benefit from this approach, but it can be especially helpful for neurodivergent kids who struggle with the "why" of different topics or homework assignments.

I might not know all my times tables by heart, but I have succeeded in math, science, and engineering.

I enjoy watching my students make connections. So often, we understand more about a topic than we think we do. Repeatedly struggling can be discouraging, and I provide a supportive environment for students to make the needed connections to grasp and understand new concepts.

Alison was amazing! She was able to explain the statistical information in a way that I understood. She was very easy to talk to and ask questions. If you need assistance in Math, I highly recommend setting up a session.

    Frequently asked questions

I want to understand what a student is struggling with and what success looks like for them. Depending on the student's age, a first meeting might focus on positive and negative experiences with learning the student has had or ideas about how they learn best. I also get a feel for how the student works through problems and when they start to struggle.

I have over 10 years of taking various math and statistics classes beyond high school, and I have worked as a TA or tutor for many of those classes.

I have also been an instructor for college classes and I have taken classes on course design, classroom climate, and other learning-related topics.

My start in teaching in tutoring evolved naturally from informally helping my peers to various teaching assistant opportunities throughout my time in college.
I typically work with high school or college students, but I have experience with a broad range of ages and student goals. I've worked with young students struggling with the basic building blocks of math to graduate students looking to review concepts before an exam.
Finding someone who will work towards your goals and has an approach to help you get there is critical to success. It doesn't matter if the teacher knows the material if they can't communicate it in a way that makes sense to you.
Most teachers should understand the "what" you need help with, but how they teach it should change based on "why" you are struggling. Think about potential problems with

    • Applying concepts to different situations
    • Knowing how to get started
    • General confusion
