About

Hi! My name is Lauren Mecum and I am a 21 year old college student studying Bioproducts and Biosystems Engineering at the University of Minnesota.

I am available to tutor in any academic subject (including art classes!) and especially love working with students who process information in a way different to the usual classroom format. I am able to engage with students based upon their individual learning styles in order to help them understand material and reach their academic potential!

A little bit about me: I scored a 34 on my ACT. I graduated with a 4.472 gpa in the top 10% of my class from St. Croix Preparatory Academy, which is ranked the most rigorous high school in MN by the Washington Post. During my time there I took and passed multiple AP classes, including AP Human Geography, AP World History, AP US History, AP Government and Politics, AP Biology, AP Calculus AB, AP Calculus BC, AP Statistics, AP Literature and Composition, AP Language and Composition, and AP 2D Studio Art. I have also studied the arts at the Atelier in Minneapolis and The Art Academy in St. Paul.

As an individual with a passion for teaching and ensuring that every student gets the attention they need, I look forward to hearing from you!

I really enjoy the opportunity to help students of all ages improve in their academics. I think that sometimes the classroom is unable to give the personal attention that a student needs, which can be difficult for those who process information in a unique way. The ability to give students the individual attention that they need in order to help them excel is a great joy to me. For me it is a way to give back by utilizing the compassion, patience, creativity, and intellect that God has given me.

Lauren is a fantastic tutor. She brought math down to a level my daughter could understand. She broke it down and took her time to explain every part and then asked my daughter questions to make sure she actually understood.

We utilized Dynamic Tutoring with our son for Algebra 1. She has done an excellent job working with him this year in the virtual format. We have hired many tutors over the years for our children and she is one of the best we have encountered. Highly recommend.

Frequently asked questions

First, I like to know what the student wants to get out of tutoring sessions. By starting with a goal, I can jump right into tailoring that student's experience. Maybe they have great writing skills, and need help adapting those skills to write high grading research papers. Or maybe they just want to pass algebra. Either goal is great!

Next, I evaluate the current level the student is at. What are their strengths and weaknesses in this subject? What fundamental concepts do they understand, and which are they struggling with?

Then I seek to discover why certain concepts are difficult for them. Did class maybe move a little to fast and the student needs more time to process? Or was the subject taught in a manner that is difficult for the student to understand? We all learn a little differently and it's extremely important to understand why a student is struggling and what I can do to supplement the teaching of their primary educator.

From there we can work on solving those complex math problems, writing those sometimes frustrating essays, improving those artworks, understanding those chemical equations, and reaching a better understanding of class material.

I have been a formal tutor for two years running dynamic tutoring, during which I've assisted a variety of students achieve their learning goals in multiple subjects. In addition, I have previous experience with informal tutoring of my peers throughout high school as well as in college. I taught beginner violin lessons once a week for two years. I have also volunteered for over a year as a public educator at Como Zoo Park and Conservatory.

All lessons are via zoom for your convenience.

Throughout the years I've always had a passion for knowledge and helping others. During my own education I found myself often working with classmates to explain material to them in different ways than the instructor, so that no one was left behind. It always frustrated me that often my classmates only needed a little more time or a different point of view to suceed - something that the classroom sometimes denied them. So when the pandemic hit in 2020 and many students switched to remote learning and struglled in the new format, I decided to start Dynamic Tutoring as a resource for those who wanted a supplement to their courses.

I have worked with a wide variety of students, from middle school to college, all with diverse skills levels and needs. My experience has prepared me to assist with special needs education as well as provide education to homeschool students. I have tutored in many subjects including: basic math, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, calculus, chemistry, and logic. I also offer other classes as part of my tutoring selection and I look forward to tailoring your students' tutoring experience to their unique needs and personalities!
