ESL, Reading, Math Elementary Tutor

I have been tutoring since September of 2010 where I tutored at Kumon Learning Center in the areas of Reading, English, and Math. I worked mainly with students ages 3-12 either indiviudally or in a small group of at most three students. I became very passionate about working with ESL students. I enjoyed getting to make connections with them while learning about their cultures and teaching them about my own. In college at UWEC, I tutored students in reading once or twice a week through a college tutoring program. I also was able to tutor a few ESL college aged student then as well. In the last three years I have been teaching Elementary Spanish as well as right now I am teaching Second Grade. I am most passionate about working with Elementary aged students as I enjoy their energy and natural joy for learning at those ages. When I teach I like to use TPR (total physical response, movement), Fountas & Pinnel (reading levels), direct instruction of skills, and the student's personal interests as much as possible. I have a little over 8 years of experience tutoring and 3 formal years experience teaching.

I love making connections and building relationships with students because I know once they have built trust in me they can learn thier best. I enjoy seeing students who have struggled suddenly make a connection and have it start to make sense. It is very rewarding to see. I will help students reach thier goals by making a weekly or daily goal sheet for them. Whether it is working on reading for 20 minutes a day or completing 10 problems of two digit subtraction correctly. I will assess the students each time I meet on their progress towards out goal. I will also find ways to assess them in non-traditional ways such as if they create a project, perfomance, or other mroe creative way of demonstrating their skills.
