Greetings! My name is Mrs. Jarma. I went to school at Bemidji State University to get my degree in elementary teaching. My experience teaching include working in rural villages in Alaska, S.E. Minnesota, and internationally aboard a ship.
Working with student in Alaska and internationally aboard the Africa Mercy has given me a compassion for students who are English Language Learners. I found that when I patiently worked with them and taught them to not only to practice, but to have a mindset of "I can learn from my mistakes". They learned to move forward with good progress.
I have been teaching for five years. I love working with kids and especially helping them thrive in their learning. I love reading and writing. It is my passion to share that love with kids.
I love helping students to achieve their goals. We all sometimes struggle. It is my pleasure to get into the struggle with kids and help them find their way to success!

What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I discuss with them what areas they are wanting to get help in (reading? writing? grammar?). Then with reading I would assess where they are using Reading A-Z benchmarks. From here we would practice reading passages and books in that level of instruction. We would discuss comprehension questions about the passage/book. With writing and grammar, I look at a piece of writing that they have done to see what they know and what we can work on from there.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a bachelor's degree in elementary education.

How did you get started teaching?
As the oldest of 7 children, I was always helping with homework. I fell in love with helping others succeed. I also fell in love with teaching through teaching Sunday school at my church.
