About

My profile is on LinkedIn

I am an experienced college biology faculty member and enjoy making biology relevant to people who find it confusing.

I first discover student interests, strengths, and learning styles and tailor my tutoring accordingly. My style is being a "guide by the side" rather than a "sage on the stage".

Frequently asked questions

I first ask about a student's interests, what they do for fun, what kind of learning is easiest for them. It's important for students to realize their learning strengths and then create a learning climate that builds on their strengths thus building their confidence.

BA in Zoology, MA in Biology, 30 years of college classroom and lab instruction.

$25.00 per session

By accident. I applied for a lab manager position at Muskingum College in New Concord Ohio, but when I went to the interview, I as asked if I woudl instead be willing to teach freshman biology. The person who was originally hired couldn't come at the last minute. I was a sabbatical replacement for the head of the department. I found at the end of that year, I really liked teaching, so I got my master's degree in Biology and continued to teach at the college level.

Beisdes biology students, I have worked with students with special learning needs, particularly those with reading difificulties. This was when I was asked to develop a progam for students with disabilities at Aoka-Ramsey Community College. I have also taught a study skills class to college students in many different majors. From these experiences I discovered  that each person has a specific way of processing and retaining information. I focus on how students learn and supporting those individual skills when teaching course content.
