Loonan Tutoring - French, Spanish
About
I first learned French in College (didn't even start until I was 21) and speaking French made it a lot easier to pick up Spanish, which I learned by speaking to local latinos. Learning French and Spanish has made my life immensely richer! I found that Language is the key that unlocks the door to the culture, and intercultural experiences and friendships can be amazing! Science tells us that learning a foreign language has tremendous positive benefits for the brain - throughout life.
I was off-the-chart ADD, and the last person you would have picked to learn any foreign language, but I was forced to take two years of a foreign language in College. I remembered "bonjour" from a French class that I had flunked freshman year in HS, which is why I chose French. Necessity is the mother of invention; I was forced to take it seriously and I found out that I could learn French and that I really enjoyed it.
I had to learn some tricks to learn. Everyone learns differently and part of my job is helping you find the learning style that works for you. I love French and want you to love French too! You guarantee the effort and I will guarantee the results!
I love introducing my students to French culture, and get the student interacting (speaking) as soon as possible.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I get to know the student by getting him or her to discuss their current past experiences with French, or another language for that matter. This is the fun part. Getting to know and build confidence in me as a teacher are also important outcomes of this early process.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I majored in French and Intercultural Communications at the University of Minnesota. I went on to found and preside over the Duluth Club Francais. I became fluent by speaking and having fun!
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
I typically charge $30 for 1/2 hour and $45 for 1 hour.
How did you get started teaching?
I worked with other students that were having problems. It seemed like I was born to tutor. I was often ahead of the class enough to help others learn the principles being taught.
What types of students have you worked with?
I tutored my daughter through highschool and college French. Several of her friends would come over for tutoring. I love tutoring. I'm very good at it. It's that simple.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Look for a teacher who will help you learn to comfortably converse in French. Don't settle for someone who will teach you only a bunch of grammar rules. Speaking the language is where the fun is. Learn to love the Language and you will love to learn the language. I guarantee it.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Why you and not some other tutor? What and how can you teach me?
