About

KC Math Tutoring focuses on elementary & middle school level math skills. The primary focus is working with students to improve overall "Math Confidence" and math proficiency so they are more willing to take on challenges in the classroom and open to learning.

I worked two years with AmeriCorp's Math Corps program where I worked directly with students in middle school as a Math Tutor. Before that, I worked at the Science Museum of Minnesota for three years.

Lessons will take place online via video chat. The first session will be a consultation meeting, in which I will spend time getting to know the student and assessing where they're at in their math skills. From there, I will customize a lesson plan that caters to their needs as well as a schedule that works for them.

While my curriculumn is based on Common Core, I don't do test prep and I don't follow your local school's curriculumn order, as I'm focused on helping boost the areas that your student need help in but school doesn't have time to do (nothing against them, they have a lot on their plate!).

The General Math Areas I cover are:

- Addition/Subtraction

- Multiplication/Division

- Ratios: Fractions, Decimals, Percentages

- Factors

- Positive and Negative Integers

- Square Roots/Exponents

- Scientific Notation

- Rational vs. Irrational Numbers

- Introduction to Algebra (Number Properties, Variables, Combining Like Terms, Order of Operations)

Generally my skills are best for students in 4th - 8th grade (ages 9 to 14), however I'm open to tutoring older students who need support.

I love working with students and watching them grow with confidence as they gain more skills. That "aha!" moment when a skill that's eluded them finally clicks is incredible.

I will be up front: Math is not my favorite subject. I feel it's very important to learn, but I know very well what it's like to struggle in it. I also know that googling for math help can send you down a rabbit hole of confusion if you aren't proficient in it. So I want to work with students to help them better understand how to navigate through math and realize that they can do it.

Frequently asked questions

First sessions will be a consultation meeting, in which I take time to get to know the student as well as their math skill levels via asking some questions and asking the student to work on some problems. That way I can figure out what areas to focus on or if I'm a good fit.

After that, I will create a lesson program that works well with them!
