About

I am currently pursuing a Bachelor's in Secondary Education: English at Rochester College. I do have experience with mentoring people in Test Prep (SAT/ACT: Reading and Writing), understanding types of literature (Poetry, xlassic vs. modern), and basic computer skills (writing or creating projects using Microsoft Office).

I love reading, understanding, and writing about literature. I also enjoy learning about the history and culture behind various literary genre: Modern, African American, Latino, 18th Century British, Native American literature. Most importantly, I enjoy sharing with others my love for English literature!

Frequently asked questions

First, I have a rief questionnaire for students to answer. The questionnaire is informal, mainly understanding the student's background and history with their particular learning subject. This is breaking ground for me to work with them in co-creating lessons best suited to their needs.

Since childhood, I have always tutored fellow students in various subjects, but my main focus was in English/Language Arts. I have continued to mentor people both young and old. Some places/organizations in my mentoring includes: READ! Muskegon Literacy, Upward Bound TRIO, Beyond Basics in Detroit, and of course years of tutoring students in elementary, high school, and college. Currently in my Education program I complete teacher observations in schools in SE Michigan where I teach lessons to high school and middle school students while helping students in 1-on-1 sessions in certain ELA areas.

This is my first time charging for tutoring sessions, so depending on the subject area (Basic computer skills to Test Prep/Essay Writing) my price range is between $25-$50 per hour.

I taught students of various ages, ranging from elementary (Pre-K-6-12th grade), while the subjects varied. I typically work with Elementary students with Language Arts and Reading/Phonics Skills. With Secondary-aged students I worked with essay writing and basic writing skills, Speech, text comprehension, and more. I also worked with older learners with basic computer skills (MS Office, Internet) as well as reading and writing.

My advice in finding and English tutor is specificity. If there is a specific subject in English--English is a broad subject--that a student needs help in contact available tutors to see if they specialize in said subject. For example, if a student needs help in Language Arts and the area of help is Dangling Modifiers and nothing else, then see if the tutor specializes in Language Arts first.

Students should think about specific struggle areas that they need help with. For instance, I've struggled with writing essays, but more specifically I struggled with creating a strong thesis for my essay. So I had to learn how to brainstorm and organization of main ideas that can help me to create a strong thesis.

Also, students should focus on pacing themselves when tackling struggle areas. It may feel daunting at times, but tutors and teachers are here to encourage students and work with them at a convenient pace for the student.
