Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I first identify the goals for both the student and parents. I then develop a strategy to address those goals, identifying the main challenges the student is facing and crafting a plan to overcome them. Both existing coursework and outside/additional tools and exercises can be used to improve a student's understanding and knowledge of their subjects, and most importantly to improve their confidence in school.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a degree in Chemistry and tutored my own classmates in both highschool and college. I also volunteered as a tutor (and coached squash) in Harlem when I lived in NYC. Also, in my professional career I have always mentored junior employees.
I enjoy helping people understand complicated topics or concepts, as well as helping them remember what they have learned by putting it into the wider context of the subject.
How did you get started teaching?
I have helped my friends and classmates with math and science from middle school through graduate school. I enjoy it and I try to make it enjoyable for others!
What types of students have you worked with?
Middleschool & Highschool - math, science, english
College - math & science
Graduate - finance, accounting, statistics
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
I believe teaching is more about communication than knowledge. Students should look for a teacher that will do more than suggest exercises and explain answers. I focus on establishing a connection with the student and helping them understand how their coursework fits in to the wider context of school and life.
