Science Tutoring
About
I am passionate about the sciences and will try to find new and unique ways to explain concepts. I find repetition is the most helpful for learning mathematically based science (such as general chemistry or physics). Subjects I am prepared to tutor include general chemistry, algebra-based physics, and biology (various levels - inquire about subjects). I have previous experience in tutoring students with disabilities.
I love that tutoring allows me to stay fresh on what I learned in college. I enjoy helping others see what is cool about the various science topics they can study!

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
First session I like to:
1. Give the student a better idea of my own background.
2. Review the syllabus (if applicable) and/or establish contact with the student's instructor so I can determine the pace of the course and the content covered by the course.
3. Talk with the student about how they learn best and identify what they are currently struggling with in their coursework.
4. Develop a list of expectations for both student and myself in order to maximize efficiency of sessions. Come up with a generalized schedule for sessions. At this point, we would also discuss cost of each session.
5. As allowed by time, start learning! This works best if the student can provide information from items 2 and 3 above ahead of the first session.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a B.S. and M.S. in biomedical sciences. I currently work in a laboratory. I also have a generalized love of the sciences and a thirst for knowledge! I always bring a good attitude, a smile, and lots of encouragement to each session!
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
First session I charge $20 so students have an opportunity to determine whether I might be a good fit for their educational needs and to see if the chemistry is ideal. After that sessions start at $25 and may increase based on the advancement of the course. Pricing will be discussed during the first session and will be agreed upon by both parties.
How did you get started teaching?
I tutored mathematics and sciences for students with disabilities while pursuing my Bachelor's degree.
What types of students have you worked with?
I was never told about the disabilities of my students due to confidentiality. Most seemed to struggle with comprehension of mathematical concepts, others seemed to have other intellectual challenges. I have never worked with individuals hard or hearing or with extreme visual impairments and may not be suited to their needs (I would need more information to determine whether I can meet the student's needs in such cases).
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Take the time to find an instructor you can talk to without fear of judgement. Finding chemistry with a tutor can be difficult but will help you in the long run. Have reasonable expectations - a tutor will not solve all your problems if you are not putting in the work as well! A good tutor will not just help you do your homework, they will challenge you to better prepare you for all of your coursework.
