Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
When working with a new student, I think it is important to focus on not only what the student struggles with academically, but truly highlight their strengths as well to make them feel more comfortable and to keep them encouraged moving forward. I like to establish a supportive relationship with the student right away so they are more apt to open their mind and focus on learning what they are struggling with.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I am a fifth year student at Grand Valley State University and a first year student in the College of Education program at the school. I have experience with children through after school programs, tutoring through my classes at GVSU, and I am a current teacher's assistant in a second grade classroom 5 half days a week.
How did you get started teaching?
I have always had a passion for learning things myself, but also helping those around me learn new things. I have always loved working with children and expanding their social, emotional, and academic skills through new techniques through education.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with all kinds of students, but mostly lower elementary aged children.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I recently started a job where I referee boy's basketball. I am a huge sports fan (basketball in particular) and doing this has been exciting for me because it puts two of my favorite hobbies together; sports and working with youth.
