Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I like to get a sense of the student's general background and to learn about their specific strengths and weaknesses. We would also discuss what specific learning styles best suit them. After that, we would go over the specific work for which they need help.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have many years of teaching college writing, history, and public policy at James Madison College at Michigan State University. I have also worked with many students on college application and graduate school application essays (and also been on review committees for admissions). I have a Ph.D. in American Studies from Boston University.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
40$ per 50 minute session.
How did you get started teaching?
Through my career as a college instructor.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with high school students, college students, students applying for graduate school, and graduate students.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I just returned from a family wedding in Santa Barbara, California. Food, family, and beautiful scenery: what's not to love?
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Look for someone who is rigorous and kindly, someone who is interested in seeing that you get your money's worth.
