Dominican Literacy Center
About
Dominican Literacy Center, founded in 1989 in Detroit, MI, is a nonprofit adult learning center focused on literacy, ESL, GED preparation, mathematics, and basic computer skills. The center provides one-to-one tutoring and small-group classes tailored to adult learners, strengthening reading, writing, speaking, listening, and numeracy so they can succeed as parents, workers, and engaged community members. A legacy institution of the Adrian Dominican Sisters, it now operates as an independent 501(c)(3). A blended team of vowed religious women and lay professionals, together with approximately 200 trained volunteer tutors, serves more than 300 students each year. With seven staff members coordinating instruction and support, learners receive individualized assessment, goal setting, and continuous progress monitoring. The center trains volunteer tutors, maintains a welcoming and respectful learning environment, and engages the community through programs and events, including its annual Spelling Bee fundraiser. Dominican Literacy Center maintains a clear focus on practical skill-building that opens doors to employment, further education, and day-to-day confidence. EIN 38-3195962.
