About

Family Learning Institute, based in Ann Arbor, MI, is a volunteer-driven nonprofit providing free, one-on-one reading tutoring for low-income students in grades 2–5 across Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti. Its programs focus on helping children achieve grade-level reading proficiency, connecting students with more than 125 volunteer tutors each week.

Led by Executive Director Sharine Buddin, the team includes Academic Directors Mary Collins (Ann Arbor) and Deborah Joseph (Dicken Elementary); Ypsilanti Director Caroline Nathans and Program Assistant Director Catherine Murau; Writing Teacher Donna Ramsey; and Program Administrator and Graphic Designer Jennifer Melchi, supported by data, technology, finance, and library staff. Governance is provided by a board of community and professional leaders, including Paul Dimond, Bill Godfrey, Steve Luongo, Jennifer Melchi, Jennifer Queen, Rick Sperling, Jean Waltman, Rob Wilson, and Kathy Wyatt. The institute was co-founded by Lefeist Galimore and Doris Sperling.

Family Learning Institute engages with countywide literacy efforts, including participation in the Literacy Coalition of Washtenaw County’s Family Literacy Initiative Campaign, and highlights local reading initiatives during March is Reading Month. Families may enroll or be referred for services, and community members are encouraged to volunteer to support students’ progress toward reading success.
