About
Hi there! My name is Lucy, and I'm a tutor based in Portland, ME offering general subject help for grades K-12, ESL tutoring for adults and children, and college application prep with an emphasis on essay composition. I do not offer SAT, ACT or specific AP tutoring. I have experience working with all types of students, including adults, non-native English speakers, and system-impacted youth.
As a tutor, I strive above all to create a trusting and collaborative environment in which my students can set and achieve their goals. Together we will identity areas of strength and weakness, create a plan with concrete and achievable benchmarks, and continue to check in as we progress.
My academic credentials are an important part of what makes me stand out as a tutor for pre-college students:
- Graduated from Tufts University (ranked #32 of all US colleges in 2022) summa cum laude with a double major.
- SAT score in the 99th percentile.
- National Merit Scholar.
I've been in you/your student's shoes, and I'm passionate about sharing what I've learned through the process of a successful academic career.
I believe that even when learning is a challenge, it can also be a joy. Let's work together to thrive academically!
There's a misconception that students struggle academically because they don't care; more often, the reality is a lot less straightforward. One of the most rewarding parts of my job as a tutor is getting to understand my students as people and helping them uncover what's holding them back from their goals. I love that I get to be involved in the process of overcoming challenges!
Moreover, my students have full lives that are much more than just school. Academic difficulties can stress you out and take you away from the things you love outside the classroom. I know this firsthand -- I was highly involved in extracurriculars and athletics throughout my high school and college careers. There's nothing more rewarding than giving my students the help and organization they need to feel more confident and restore balance when it comes to academics.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
When I work with someone new, I always spend time getting to know them as a person and as a student. What I need to know up front is:
- What are your academic aspirations for a month from now? A year? 5 years?
- What do you love about learning? What do you struggle with?
- When you've overcome other challenges in your life, how did you achieve them?
- How much time do you (realistically!) want to spend daily and weekly to achieve this academic goal?
With this information, we will work to make a plan that you/your student is mutually accountable for and that never feels like a chore.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
Pricing for my lessons is set at a flat rate of $30/hour. If this is prohibitively expensive for you, please reach out.
**IMPORTANT: I offer a free 20-minute consultation/introduction meeting for every new student. It's important to me that we meet each other before working together to make sure it's a good fit!
How did you get started teaching?
I started tutoring privately in 2019, starting with adult ESL learners. I continued to tutor online throughout the pandemic and returned to in-person teaching in the spring of 2022.
