About

One-on-One tutoring services in all things history and social studies, research and writing. As a veteran history and humanities teacher, with over 30 years of experience, I have helped my own students. As a tutor, I have helpd all students through in-school Writing Labs in schools in Maryland, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Tennessee, Washington, D.C. and Delaware. As an independent tutor, I established a policy of pro-rating the first hour of tutoring while also accepting referred pro bono cases. I love teaching, have an irreverent sense of humour, believe in the power of the written and spoken word, and know that history is far more than a record of facts and chronology. As Malcolm X has said, "Of all our studies, history is best qualified to reward our research."

I have been awarded with a fellowships to Poland and Israel studying the Holocaust and Jewish Resistance; a Fulbright-Hays Group Projects Abroad Fellowship to study in Moscow and Vladimir, Russia; two NEH Summer Seminar awards to study the literature and theatre of the Holocaust; a teacher's fellowship to the Civil War Institute; a Gilder Lehrman seminar fellowship to Oxford University on "The Age of Lincoln"; a summer seminar grant to study Alexis de Toqueville's Democracy in America at St. John's College in Annapolis. I was the recipent of the Belz Lipman award as the High School Teacher of the Year in Holocaust Education from the Tennessee Holocaust Commission.

I have worked as a house painter, film projectionist, landscaper, musician, and crew leader for the United States Forest Service (USFS). While these experiences may not directly impact my work as a tutor, they have helped shape my approach. While I believe in the accountability and initiative of the individual, I also embrace a mantra from my experiences working with young people in the USFS Youth Conservation Corps (YCC): "All of us are stronger than one of us; all of us are smarter than one of us."

Frequently asked questions

The first session is a bit of a blind date: I want to learn about the student and their needs, and want the prospective client to learn enough about me to decide if they are comfortable for return visits. Thus, the first session is free if we decide to continue a tutoring relationship. If not, the first session is billed at a discount.

The conversation moves to identifying the student's background, immediate need and long-range goals. This session will also include tutoring, whether or not it is about understanding historical content, addressing writing or researching strategies - broadly or for a specific assignment - or assessing study skills.

At the conclusion of the session, the student will be left with the question about their level of comfort in continuing a tutoring relationship. This question does not have to be answered in that session, but given a day to reflect, should be answered within 24 hours of the conclusion of the introductory session.
