About
Brilliant Minds offers student centered tutoring to accommodate the individual strengths and challenges of each student. I am devoted to increasing performance and student's self-confidence. I teach not only subject matter but skills that will help students to be more efficient learners and retain more of what they are learning.
I've a PhD in the biological sciences and years of teaching experience and tutoring that include biology, ecology, environmental science, introductory statistics, intro evolution, mycology, arboriculture, and botany. I've taught middle school, high school, and college courses. I was awarded an NSF Teaching Fellowship and helped develop ecology curricula for ASUs Ecology Explorers.
Helping students gain a strong understanding of science or statistics topics and watching them develop confidence when they begin to "own" their knowledge.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
First meeting - review overall grades and goals; discuss concepts that confuse them most by reviewing graded assignments and tests. Work out a schedule for tutoring based on goals, time we have till the end of the semester/quarter, and parent's goals and limits.
Second meeting - based on what the students has told me about how they learn and retain information best, I'll develop a protocol to review work and concepts to help them make the most out of reading, note-taking, and test-taking.
Follow-on meetings - we continue to work as per 2nd meeting and refine as need be while improving homework and test scores.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Teaching K12 to college and several years of tutoring experience. Higher degrees in biology which includes utilzation of statistics, writing. Over 22 published research papers in peer-reviewed science journals.
