My name is Dan and I am working as a tutor in the South Shore Area, based in Quincy. I am 25 years old, a graduate of the University of Massachusetts and am a middle school teacher in Quincy. I am licensed to teach Secondary Math I specialize in tutoring Math and Science, but also have experience teaching history. I also speak Portuguese. I enjoy helping a student, who may be experiencing frustration or anxiety with a subject area, grow comfortable and confident in their own ability to solve problems. "Give a man a fish and you will feed him for a day. Teacha man how to fish and you will feed him for life" The goal is to help to student make that transition as thoroughly and efficiently as possible

What is your typical process for working with a new student?
We begin with tutor-student introductions. I let them know some of my interests and hobbies and ask them what theirs are. Next, we discuss the student's strengths and weakness in the choosen subject. Then, we discuss what the student's expectations and goals they hope to accomplish working with me and I express what my expectations from the student will be. Finally, we begin to tackle the subject matter and solidify our understanding of the material. Lastly, we will assess the student's comprehension of the material they have reviewed and fill in knowledge gaps post-assessment
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I frequently collaborated with my peers while earning my undergraduate degree to help each other better our understanding of class material. This taught me how to work with different personalities and how to explain a subject to people who learn best via various methods. This helped prepare me to teach and tutor students while working as a substitute teacher, where I strengthened that ability. I have experience working with people with various physical and mental disabilities as a camp counsellor, personal care assistant, substitute teacher, and coach.

How did you get started teaching?
I began as a substitute teacher at Quincy High School in October 2018. I passed the necessary exams and earned my DESE certification to teach Secondary Math during the course of the school year. I then worked as the Technology/Engineering Teacher at a middle school before accepting a job in Guidance at Quincy High in Fall 2020.
