John Allenbach Tutoring

I provide one-on-one college admissions coaching and test-prep tutoring. I specialize in helping students navigate admission to selective colleges and universities and in helping already-strong test takers push their SAT, ACT, or GRE scores higher. My approach is flexible to the needs of each student and family, but consistently patient, rigorous, and focused on teaching students how to think rather than simply giving them tricks.

I am an award-winning teacher with 15 years of experience in high school and graduate education. I taught ACT prep and AP Statistics as a certified high school math teacher and later taught economics, statistics, and analytic frameworks to master's students at Harvard Kennedy School, where I earned my MPP. I have also taught SAT prep through Kaplan and privately. I scored a 36 on the ACT, 1580 on the SAT (780 verbal, 800 math), and 338 on the GRE (168 verbal, 170 math), with a 6.0 in analytical writing.

I also bring five years of experience as a Director of College Counseling at a New Orleans high school. I advised hundreds of students of color from low-income backgrounds through every stage of the college process, from building a college list and developing an application strategy to essays, financial aid, and final enrollment decisions. Students I advised went on to attend Stanford, Yale, NYU, Georgetown, USC, Grinnell, Davidson, and other selective institutions.

In addition to admissions and test preparation, I tutor mathematics at all levels and economics and statistics through the master's level.
