Redbird Math And Science
About
I help students with math from middle school to grad school. I provide ongoing support if you are having trouble keeping up with a class. I can also help review for a final exam, or prepare for standardized tests (SAT, GRE, GMAT, etc.)
I work with a lot of students who think they "aren't math people." I help them build skills and confidence they can bring to whatever math problems they need. Someone might need to:
do well in a math class to graduate, or
get a better score on a standardized test, or
take a chemistry class that includes math, or
do their own accounting instead of trusting the finance dept, or
understand statistics for their PhD research.
The best thing about private tutoring is the way I can adapt to what the student needs. Working through problems is a great way to learn many of the subjects I teach, but if a student is bewildered by a problem that's way too hard, that's counter-productive. Sitting next to the student, I can see when they're confused (sometimes even when they're too shy to ask directly), and explain a different way.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
While most people learn best by practicing, it has to be the right kind of practice. Flailing around at something intimidating, where you don't know how to even start, can be discouraging and counterproductive. That's why I try to determine a student's level of understanding early in the process. I don't throw you in the deep end with a long list of problems you can't solve--I give you a problem and ask you to explain how you'd solve it. Then give you a harder one or an easier one. It's quicker and easier for both of us.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a Masters Degree in Chemistry from Cornell, where I was a teaching assistant for Introductory Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, and Physical Chemistry. While pursuing a PhD at RPI, I was a volunteer tutor for Chemistry and Chemical Engineering students. While working in industry, I taught my co-workers Statistics, Experiment Design, and Technical Writing. More recently, I have been a professional independent tutor, helping students with test prep, math, statistics, chemistry, and physics.
What types of students have you worked with?
Middle school, high school, and college students who are struggling to keep up with math or chemistry classes.
High school and college students who are doing A- work, and want to do even better.
Teens preparing for SAT, ACT, or AP exams. (Mostly high school students, but a few homeschoolers and people who have already finished high school.)
Adult learners who are trying to get up to speed before returning to school.
