I love working with all types of students, and one of the things I am known for is treating every one of the students I work with as a unique individual with his/her/their own strengths and interests as well as areas they need to improve upon. Thus, I try to get to know each student and use their areas of strength and their interests to make learning more enjoyable, and also easier and more effective for them.
I am also very much know for building relationships with my students and their families, and it is very often the case that students I have in a class, a program, or that I tutor when they are in elementary, middle, or high school, will still be in touch with me, as will their family, well after they are out of college and/or even graduate or professional school. I believe showing a genuine interest in a student, and building a relationship with them, only makes the teaching and learning process go much better and the learning take hold not only faster and easier in the moment, but the things learned stick in the memory for much longer when the relationship with the teacher is one in which the student feels the teacher has a real interest in him/her/them (there are a number of studies which show this, but I knew this from my work with kids back when I was in middle and high school in the 80's, long before any of these studies).

What is your typical process for working with a new student?
My process for working with a new student varies somewhat depending on the age of the student, the subject matter, and the timeframe that is given to meet the goals that the student or parents have. In most cases, my process involves first trying to do some activities to get to know the student, help find out more about his/her/their own interests and assess their goals, and assess where they are currently, over the first couple of sessions, while also, if needed addressing any immediate assistance they need for assignments and so forth. Occasionally this process just is not appropriate, however, such as when I am hired last-minute to help someone or a small group study for a mid-term or final exam and they need me to jump right in and help with that specific material in a very quick and focused manner. I can adapt to the situation, but I prefer getting to know my students so I can tailor my style and my curriculum and materials to each individual.
