Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Evaluative but friendly meeting with student following parent request. Thereafter work with parents to achieve a service plan...and then deliver with continued parent updates & student expectation setting. I use actual stats as much as possible to assist with progress evaluation ongoing.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Multiple degrees in English, 30 years of teaching & tutoring success
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
We have a variety of options, from shared drop-in times to one to one. We specialize in several key areas; children learning to read, children developing writing skills from 3rd through high school, and applications to college, PA School, Nursing School & Medical School. We provide standardized test prep especially for the ISEE, SSAT, SAT & ACT
How did you get started teaching?
My oldest daughter came home from school and said, "Mom, you think I'm smart, but I'm really not". After helping her get tutoring help and seeing the lack of programs and standards we began a tutoring school which grew to over 200 students.
What types of students have you worked with?
All types and ages -- from learning letters to applying to Medical School.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
Most recent (and a frequent story), a family requested help with a student who didn't like to read, and was behind in class. That particular student (and many more like him), are always fun to teach as they begin to appreciate the advantages of being a reader. I have also worked with some very talented medically based applicants who had never explored their writing capabilities, and who ultimately achieved acceptance above what their test scores might have indicated.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Find out how the tutor is going to work with the FAMILY, not just the student! Make sure you are going to get detailed updates & understand how things are going and what might be needed.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
What do they hope to achieve, and how much time and energy are they willing to put in.
