Perera STEM Tutoring
About
I hold a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering and have passed my Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) in Chemical Engineering exam, so I have to know quite a bit of math and science for me to do well in my current job! I tutor on the side to keep up with my skills and to fulfill my passion for teaching. I am extremely passionate about math, science, and engineering (especially chemistry, thermodynamics, and material and energy balances). I also did exceptionally well in both high school and college at history, writing, and reading - I continue to teach all these subjects on a regular basis.
I have a fantastic academic record. I graduated with honors from my university - not an easy feat as an engineering major. I also earned a 4.0 GPA in my college preparatory high school, and I graduated as valedictorian. I definitely fully understand every single subject I tutor.
I have tutored many students during high school, university, and now as a professional between being a teaching assistant and private tutor. My basic approach to tutoring is to see why you are struggling. For most students, it is because they aren't quite up to scratch in fundamentals, and if that is the case I will focus on solidifying those with you. After that, I will work on the problems that not understanding fundamentals caused. If your fundamentals aren't the problem, usually a student doesn't understand something because it hasn't been explained in a way that they can understand, so I will do my best to find a way to best explain them to you. This method has worked with every single student I have tutored. I will NOT do your homework for you - I will simply try to help you learn enough so that you can complete it and, more importantly, understand it on your own.
I truly hope that you consider me for tutoring - I will do the absolute best job I can to help you succeed in your academic difficulties. There is nothing more that I enjoy than helping a struggling student.
Teaching is my favorite part of the day - I love seeing difficult concepts "click" with my students. More importantly, I love enabling my students to seriously consider STEM careers because they enjoy the subject after we worked together, not something that would have happened if they had just had their school teacher.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I start by asking for homework samples and prior tests so that I can get an idea for how the student thinks. This gives me a good idea as to how I need to structure my teaching to be the most effective for the specific student.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
B.S. Chemical Engineering, Colorado School of Mines
MBA (In Process), The Ohio State University
15+ years tutoring
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
$75/hour in-person
$50/hour online (Zoom platform), might be higher for more advanced classes such as organic chemistry and calculus
How did you get started teaching?
I started tutoring in college to make some extra money as an undergraduate and found out that I was both good at it and really liked it. Now, I continue to do it after work so that I keep in touch with my basic math/science skills - and also because I really enjoy it.
What types of students have you worked with?
Middle school, high school, and university levels.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Interview your tutor and look for practical, real-life experience outside of being a teacher. My students understand me best when I bring in work examples into my teaching because they can relate to it well.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Why am I struggling? Is it the teacher or the material? Do I understand the material but am not able to complete the mechanics (very common with science classes) due to lack of math comfort/ability?
