Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
My typical process is to meet with the parents and the student to make sure that it will be a good fit, and then adapt my teaching style to best match how the student learns. I work in tandem with any material they are receiving from school and focus on achieving a deeper understanding of important topics. I prefer a hands-on tutoring policy that involves working with students to reach a solution through guided questions. This is effective because it doesn't just give the answer away while building confidence and reinforcing understanding on a secondary level.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I am currently a chemist working for the U.S. EPA, and I have my bachelor's degree majoring in chemistry and neuroscience. I have been tutoring for nearly five years now, and have worked with all types of students at all grade levels. From middle school to high school to college, from homeschooling to private schools to public schools I have had at least a little experience with them all.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
My basic pricing system is $35.00 per in-person session. If it is a remote tutoring situation, the price drops to $30.00 per online session. The sessions are scheduled to be one hour long. These prices are not fixed, as I am understanding and recognize that these are difficult times. Even if these are outside your typical price ranges, feel free to reach out and we can reach a mutually beneficial agreement.
How did you get started teaching?
I got started teaching in high school when I was in AP classes and would hold study sessions for the other students in my classes. More than this, I would lead study sessions for younger grades taking science classes I had already taken. This escalated in college when I got a job as a teaching assistant for organic chemistry. It is a passion of mine that I am happy to share with those around me.
What types of students have you worked with?
As previously mentioned, I have worked with all types of students at all grade levels. From middle school to high school to college, from homeschooling to private schools to public schools I have had at least a little experience with them all.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
A recent event I am fond of is working with a middle school girl who was being homeschooled. He has a unique learning system where it was a blend of two different teaching programs and required a lot of time and effort put into blending the two programs in a concise and efficient manner. I feel like I did a good job with this, and the student when on to say that she had never learned so much in one year. Another recent(ish) event that made me proud was when I began tutoring a high school boy who was doing very poorly in his classes, particularly chemistry. He then went on to turn his grade around and ended up taking the AP chemistry test and receiving a 4 on it.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
I would say to make sure that whoever is tutoring you has real-world experience in the field. It gives a deeper perspective on how it applies in the real world and can lead to more positive interactions because it proves how it can be used, and how you aren't just learning it to then never use it in life.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
What their teaching style is, and how it compares to their learning style. By reaching out to a teacher and asking these questions, it allows you to make sure you have the best fit for you personally.
