About

**NOT CURRENTLY TAKING NEW STUDENTS**

My name is Kathryn O'Connor, I'm a first year PhD student in pure mathematics at Cornell University. I have a Bachelor's in Math and Statistics from Northwestern University, 2018.

I have been tutoring math and statistics on and off for about 6 years, and I love it. I greatly enjoy helping each individual student learn how to approach problems, addressing their unique learning styles and background. I believe every student is capable of mastering their subject, given the proper guidance.

My experiences include:

-TA of Calculus I & II at University of Pennsylvania (2018-2019).

-Math & Stats Tutor to student athletes at Northwestern University (2017-2018).

-Camp Counselor at Upward Bound, Fitchburg State University (Summer 2016); This was an academic summer camp for underserved high school students.

-America Reads Tutor in Evanston, IL (2015-2016); This was an after-school program for elementary school students to learn math, reading, and writing.

-National Honors Society Tutor at Wachusett Regional High School (2013-2014).

-Private Tutor for college student in trigonometry (Spring 2013).

Frequently asked questions

Typically I spend the first session simply evaluating a student's background and comfort level with the subject. Some students might need additional review of the previous year's material, while some are ready to skip ahead to the challenges. I'm happy to work with students at any level and adjust to their learning needs.

I have a Bachelor's degree in Math and Statistics from Northwestern University; I graduated magna cum laude with a GPA of 3.87/4.0. In Fall 2019, am going to begin a PhD in pure mathematics at Cornell University.

I have also received training as a camp counselor and TA, which included learning about various teaching techniques and scenarios. However, my experiences in actually tutoring students have taught me the most about this work. Every student is unique, and I learn a lot from each of them.

I typically charge $40/hr for tutoring, but am willing to negotiate.

For group tutoring, I would charge +$5/hr per additional student.

Look for someone who understands your way of thinking, and whose explanations make sense to you. If you're having trouble understanding them, make sure to speak up and ask for a different explanation. The purpose of private tutoring is to get your questions answered, no matter how many explanations it takes.
