My name is Marina Berman, I am a licensed mental health counselor currently working in my own private practice. I would like to expand how I work within the community so I am interested in tutoring. I have always had an interest in teaching and I minored in education during my undergraduate studies.
As a counselor I specialize in working with children and have both the academic knowledge to work with special needs children and also the personality and passion for it. I meet students at their current skill level and I am able to scaffold knowledge and to teach skills. If necessary I am able to direct students to utilize coping skills when they get frustrated and to follow and provide a positive reinforcement schedule.
I enjoy working both with special education students and students that are able to access the curriculum more easily. All students have strengths and needs and it is my passion to help students recognize their strengths to help them do better in areas of need.

What is your typical process for working with a new student?
When I first meet a new student I assess the student's needs both academic and emotional by talking to the parents and the student. I also do assessment through observation while working with the student.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I am a licensed mental health counselor with a master's degree in psychology and I studied education in my undergraudate program. I was also a tutor when I was in my undergraudate program for both elementry school children and other psychology students at my college.
