About
Hello there! I'm Carla from Peru. I am a fully qualified Spanish tutor.
I am quite cheerful, friendly, and enthusiastic. I enjoy sharing my language and culture with students from all over the world through dynamic activities to keep the lessons interesting and engaging, as most of my experience is with very young learners ages 6 to 15.
You'll gain confidence from our lessons and this will encourage you to practice your Spanish in public without fear.
Instead of just getting you to memorize verbs and pronouns, I'll teach you everything most Spanish books overlook like how to engage in small talk, slang words, and typical conversational phrases native speakers actually use. During the trial lesson, we’ll get to know each other and talk about your needs and interests in any special vocabulary, reading, and writing skills as well as speaking and listening proficiency.
After 3 years of working as a Spanish teaching assistant at an elementary school (tutoring American children living in Peru), last year I switched to online teaching due to covid restrictions and have worked with several students over the past 12 months, from young learners age 5 to college students and working adults taking Spanish for the first time. I mostly specialize in teaching grammar, vocabulary and helping the student speak with confidence. I provide all course materials, including games, activities, and small homework assignments (no worksheets I promise!). All lessons are tailored to the student's age, interests, and level.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Firstly I try to get to know my students so that I can customize my lessons to their specific needs and learning styles (ex: some students are visual learners whereas others are hands-on learners). The first lesson is mainly centered around finding out what my students already know and what their goals are (improving their pronunciation, listening skills or simply preparing to travel to a Spanish-speaking country). Then we create a study plan and discuss potential mini assignments or goals for each session (if they choose to move forward) so that they know what to expect in advance.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I've been tutoring school-aged children in Spanish for 3 years now and feel proud of the results not only because their Spanish has significantly improved but because they were able to enjoy the learning experience, which is my ultimate goal for these lessons. Due to this pandemic, I had to transition to online lessons, and being an online student myself, I know from experience what techniques or methods work best to keep the students engaged and motivated.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Overall I would advise them to take the time to ask lots of questions and truly get to know their tutors before making a decision. While reviews are definitely helpful, not all lessons work for the same type of students and it all comes down to choosing tutors they genuinely feel comfortable with. I've had amazing English tutors and I can say from my own experience that it is important to work with someone you have chemistry and feel comfortable with.
