About

While I am not a tutoring business, I pride myself on working well with a wide variety of students in order to help them see genuine improvement in their knowledge and understanding of the materials they struggle with! In particular, I have worked to gain a sense of pedagogical method, in other words, a teaching strategy, that is very adaptive and encouraging as I find students learn and internalize their new skills more effectively when met with kindness and respect. I have served as a private tutor to several levels of students from elementary to course tutoring for undergraduate level courses. Additionally, I do have classroom experience co-teaching Liberal Arts Survey, and teaching accommodations mathematics in both Geometry and Algebra I. Because I had the benefit of working with my students in another teacher's classroom, I was able to focus on quickly and efficiently answering questions and offering unique examples that students could more easily understand. Outside of my classroom experience, my educational background lends me the knowledge base to assist with Religious Studies, English, and some Psychology, which were respectively my major and two minor areas of study at Rhodes College. More recently I have graduated with a Master of Arts in Ancient Religions from Yale University, and will in the fall begin a PhD program at UC Davis, which qualifies me to help students study and analyze the Bible, primarily in Biblical Hebrew, but I also have some facility with Koine Greek. More generally I enjoy teaching students how to research, reading strategies, analysis, critical thinking skills, problem-solving, and more!

I most enjoy seeing students build confidence with their subject material and areas of former struggle. Seeing a student go from feeling helpless in the face of a test or assignment to ready and able to take on that same assignment or even one more challenging is incredibly heartening to me. I care most about encouraging my students and seeing them grow.

    Frequently asked questions

First and foremost I like to gauge what a student does understand and build from there. I have worked with students of all ability levels, and I prioritize and focus on their improvement over time. Sometimes this means basic skill-building before catching up to the issues in class, and other times this process reveals only a minor misconception leading a student astray. My process is very student-focused and tailored to meet your student's particular needs. I strive to create an environment where students are not ashamed to ask any questions because my experience has shown that when students are asked to fill the gaps in their own knowledge without assistance is where problems arise! General skills are incredibly important, but projects with deadlines will take priority and any assistance I offer will be given in line with the teacher's rubric in order to best assure student success. I do have a strict academic honesty policy though and will not help students plagiarize. Though I will gladly edit and work through as many drafts of a student's own written work as it takes to create a satisfactory final product!
