Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
When I begin working with a new student, I like to have an informal interview to discover likes, dislikes, interests, and hobbies. From this information often connections can be made into lessons for engagement of materials I may use, and, supports our connecting when learning. I move at the child's level and scaffold or support the pace they may need, or, supplement and extend learning when needed.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have 20 years of experience in the field of Education. I began as a literacy tutor for America Reads and Americorps. I studied education with a focus on language and literacy in my undergard and student taught for 2 semester, while working at a center for after-school tutoring. I worked in a private school in NYC for 5 years for children with special learning needs and pursued my Masters in Education. I have taught overseas in Korea, Thailand and Hong Kong at internatinal schools. I have tutored or mentored students throughout my career outside of my full time teaching or adminstration job at Elementary schools.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
Due to my 20 years of experience and 1:1 tutoring for over 15 years in primarily literacy, as well as my extensive education background, I would price $30-$40/hour.
How did you get started teaching?
I began as a literacy tutor in the America Reads program when I was in my undergraduate work. I then pursued literacy work in the Americorps program and began my studies as an Elementary School teacher, having primarily taught Pre-K-2nd grade, worked as a Special Educator supporting children with learning needs in my career.
What types of students have you worked with?
Children ages 4 to 10, that may need extra support in literacy areas (reading, writing, spelling, languge expression). I have also worked with children in the same age range to extend learning in literacy and provide higher order questioning.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I was lucky to celebrate Chinese New Year in Hong Kong when I was working and living there, it was a beautiful time for families, celebration and lion dancers!
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Look for a tutor with experience in your area of need or desire and see if you match by talking or chatting with the tutor to feel comfortable with their methods.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
What goals do I want to work on? What may I find tricky or challenging that I want to work on? What do I want to improve? What do I want to increase to the highest level?
