As an experienced writing tutor and instructor of English at the college level, I can provide you with the knowledge needed to be well prepared for college writing. The essay is quite a daunting task, but I will teach you about all aspects of the essay, including how to write a clear thesis, how to properly organize your body paragraphs, and how to leave your reader with a thought-provoking conclusion. Of course, if this is knowledge you already have, we can take it to the next level and discuss the nuances to make your paper A+ work.
As a teacher and tutor for two years now, I find that working one on one with students allows for me to really get to know the strengths of a student as well as where they need improvement. The best part about this job is that I get to see my students grow. And in my experience, I've seen many of them do so because of their hard work and my dedication to encouraging them to discover new ways of thinking. I've had a lot of success in tutoring students, and I hope I can provide the same experience for you!

What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Usually, a student will come to me with an assignment that they would like assistance with. Together, we will read through their writing (whether it's an essay or a short piece of writing) and discuss the strengths of the piece. In doing so, the student will see where else in the writing they can implement those strengths. Once we have done this, we will look at the areas that could use a bit more work. As a teacher, I will first ask the student to identify these areas. My hope is that in being able to identify these areas that you are able to be critical and reflective of your own work. However, if this is not possible, I will step in and identify those areas. Together, we will work to sharpen those skills for the current project and those in the future.
If a student doesn't have a specific project in mind, that's totally okay! I have a folder full of writing prompts and exercises to write about. They're intended to encourage the imagination and inquiry into matters that are of interest to you.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I hold a Bachelor of Arts in English literature and philosophy from Augustana College ('14). In May of 2021, I will receive a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing with an emphasis in poetry from the University of New Orleans. So, while most of my experience in tutoring/teaching is in essay writing, I would be very excited to discuss creative writing as well!
