About

I hold a degree in secondary education with the chemistry teaching option from Penn State University. I currently live in New Orleans but can offer virtual tutoring for any students enrolled in high school chemistry courses.

My experience has included teaching general, honors and AP chemistry. I find that a one-on-one tutoring environment allows the student and tutor to work together to really pinpoint misunderstandings and areas of confusion. This saves an immense amount of time, confusion and frustration, and it makes the learning experience much more enjoyable. By pulling from a variety of strategies including slide presentations, video references, discussions, guided practice and simple virtual demos, tutoring sessions can be customized to each particular student's learning style.

I enjoy bringing students the excitement of suddenly understanding a little more about how the world works. The world of chemistry can be mysterious...and unlocking those secrets can show us that the world is even more fascinating and strange than we expected.

Frequently asked questions

No single approach works for all students.

First, the student should identify either specific content areas to focus on or specific goals. This might include being able to solve a certain type of problem and simply having a better understanding of a concept. If the student can identify areas to improve and set goals, we're already ahead of the game.

Sometimes students feel overwhelmed and don't know where to start. That's ok, too! In this case, we can start by looking at tests and quizzes together to see where there is confusion. If tests and quizzes aren't available, usually a quick conversation about topics will help me key on what we need to do.

Once we identify what we need to improve, we'll make a gameplan. This might be as simple as demonstrating a skill, guiding the student through the skill and then having the student demonstrate their mastery. For more conceptual learning, this might include observing concepts through demos or videos and discussing what mechanisms are at play.

I have a degree in secondary education from Penn State University and have taught general, honors and AP chemistry. Beyond that classroom I also have worked as a variety entertainer, bringing magic and circus arts to schools, colleges and companies with fellow performers. This experience has helped me to really engage audiences and students alike, making the learning experience more enjoyable.

Standard pricing is $20/hr.

I am aware of the unsual circumstances we are currently in and can offer flexibility if needed.

-What am I good at and what do I enjoy? (This can help inform how the tutoring sessions go.)

-What helps me learn? (Do I need to see things done first? Do I need to physically do things to really learn? Is reading or watching an explanation more helpful?)

-What specific questions do I have about content?

-Are there specific examples of things I need help with that I can provide from schoolwork?
