Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
My typical process starts by going over the student's assignment, and asking them to explain it to me as they understand it. From here, we have a good jumping-off point into the areas in which they are struggling.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a degree in English with a couple years of freelance editing, copywriting, and proofreading under my belt.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
My standard pricing is $20 for a half hour consultation, $40 for an hour long consultation, and then $15/hr for any subsequent lessons.
How did you get started teaching?
I have been working with children since I was a pre-teen, when I began volunteering in my church's children's ministry. Since then, I have had many babysitting jobs, and several private tutoring sessions. I aided children & teens with after-school homework in my time working in Childcare, and later during my time as an Education Ranger at Acadia National Park, I was able to teach to many different grade levels in school.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with students who are second graders, all the way up to college students.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Look for someone who cares about your voice.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
What does my assignment want me to do? What have I done so far? How can I improve my understanding through context clues?
Or, if a student is writing an essay; how much research or reading have I done? Do I need to create an outline or revisit my thesis?
