Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I like to meet with my students first and get to know them. When I ask questions, I can learn how to specifically design lessons to meet their needs. If the student needs help with basic reading/phonics, I might use UFLI or Spire. If the need is comprehension, I would choose a novel to read and discuss. Most students need help in grammar, and I like using Shurley for grades 2-8. For vocabulary my choice is Sadlier. I have my own materials for teaching essay writing.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a BA and MA in elementary education, an English Language Arts license, a K-6 license, and certification for Administration/Supervision. I have taught K-8th and served as an elementary, English language arts, reading, and math teacher and as an assistant principal and principal for grades preK-5.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
I charge $50 per hour online. The charge may be more if I need to commute.
How did you get started teaching?
Upon graduation from Ball State University, I began my teaching career as a middle school math teacher in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have taught students with varying abilities from beginning readers (including dyslexic students) to advanced learners. My lessons are customized to my students' needs.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
Three and a half years ago I began teaching a student online living in China. I have witnessed this student start as a emerging English speaking third grader to an accomplished ESL student.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
The first meeting can tell a lot. Students need to feel comfortable with their tutor and enjoy the lessons.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
What are my needs? How do I see myself meeting those needs?
What types of lessons do I prefer?
How long will sessions last? How frequently will we meet? Is my teacher flexible if I need to change a tutoring time?
What type of personality do I prefer in a teacher?
Do I want assignments to complete on my own or do I want lessons where we work as a team?
