Next Step Learning Centers

Next Step Learning Center, founded in 2016 and based in South Bend, Indiana, provides one-on-one, evidence-based instruction to improve reading accuracy and comprehension. Each learner begins with an initial reading evaluation, followed by an individualized plan targeting core sensory-cognitive functions, including sight word recognition, spelling, oral vocabulary, and dynamic mental imagery. Instruction draws on the Seeing Stars and Visualizing and Verbalizing programs to build symbol imagery for decoding and concept imagery for comprehension and recall, with progress monitored during sessions by qualified instructors.

The center serves students from first grade through college, as well as adults. Services support struggling beginning readers; learners with weak comprehension or retention; and students with Autism, Dyslexia, Down Syndrome, ADD/ADHD, or undiagnosed developmental delays, along with those who wish to advance beyond grade level. Instruction emphasizes Socratic questioning, strengths-based feedback, and engaging activities to build confidence and motivation. Sessions are available at the student’s home, school, or local library.

The team includes educators with substantial training and experience. Peter Staffelbach (BA, Sewanee: The University of the South) has international teaching experience and training with Lindamood-Bell programs. Michael Busk (PhD, University of Southern California; BA, University of Notre Dame) has over fifteen years of teaching and tutoring experience.
