Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
First, I like to see a student work through a problem in order to see his preferred method and style of thinking. From there, I try to calmly explain the topic in a way that fits with the student's way of thinking, while also answering any questions the student might have along the way.
What types of students have you worked with?
Large varieties of students from various backgrounds. I taught some athletic/sporty types at my high school how to play chess and other topics. I have also tutored those who are usually very academically sound, and just happen to struglle on a topic or two. Overall, I have some experience working with just about anybody.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Mathematics and Computer Science can be very difficult to learn topics. If a teacher seems like they cannot always explain everything in a way that seems to make it easy, that is not always a bad thing. Look for a teacher that is extremely knowledgable about the topic, and knows how to give you a sound understanding of the topic, even if that understanding seems difficult at first.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
If there is a certain type of problem you are stuck on, think "Where is it that I get stuck?" rather than giving up prematurely. This will help your teacher get to the root of the problem early, and this can save much headache in the future.
