Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Asking questions to figure out their learning style. Some need hands on, while others just need help thinking outside the box. For example, my daughter did not understand cross multiplication, I showed her a different way of doing it, and she understood it completely. She has not had to ask me for help with it again!!
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I do not have a college degree, but I've taken a multitude of math classes ranging from basic math up to quantitative reasoning throughout the years to keep my mind fresh!
How did you get started teaching?
Once I have figured out the learning style of my student I begin with the simplist of problems, working them up to the hardest problems while we work through them all step by step so they can build a better understanding of the problem itself!
What types of students have you worked with?
Elementary and middle school aged students. I have had the student who has refused to try, who eventually sailed through algebra. I've also had the student who soaked everything in with ease. Each is different which makes it even more interesting to teach them!
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Make sure the teacher understands teaching in all learning styles.
