About
Melissa has always believed in making sure others are able to learn and in engage as a student in a way that makes sense for them - not everyone learns the same! Outside of being a tutor, Melissa works as a Family Case Manager for the Department of Child Services to further ensure children are receiving the attention, love, and fair chance they deserve. This very motive plays into Melissa's passion for helping students fully understand their course material.
Melissa has previously earned a bachelors degree, is currently studying for her second bachelors degree, and will soon be pursuing a masters degree. Melissa has spent several years providing one-on-one lessons to students in her local area and wishes to extend the opportunity to students virtually, who may not have access to adequate one-on-one lessons given the current pandemic and it's affects on schools.
I thoroughly enjoy helping students learn in ways they never thought they would be able to. I love helping students unleash their own potential and seeing them feel good about their ability!

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
First, I think it is important to get to know the student; specifically getting to know their interests and hobbies so I can know how to best keep them engaged and give them real world applications for their questions. As the student and I are working through their questions, I think it is best to have them walk me through their thought process - this not only shows me what they DO understand, but very quickly pinpoints any areas of growth that may be necessary.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
My first Bachelor's degree was geared toward education and even involved a tutoring aspect. I would go into community centers to provide additional learning help and peer mentoring for children that may not have opportunities for this type of engagement at home. I spent several months student teaching in each public educational school setting: Elementary, Middle, and High School. Upon completion of my degree, I provided individual lessons for several years and enjoy working with students one-on-one to ensure they are receiving an individually tailored education.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with students of all ages! I believe it's never too late to learn a new skill. I also believe there are foundational building blocks that can be taught to children at very young ages that prepare them to successfully take in new information.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Please, don't ever be afraid to ask questions. Sometimes the answers to your questions are not based in the strategy - as you may already have the tools! It may just be a matter of a different perspective that helps it click for you!
