Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
1. Meet together to find out your needs and get to know you as a learner.
2. Develop a plan that will address those learning needs.
3. Execute that plan and adapt along the way as I get to know you and your learning needs better.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have taught in an elementary school for 25 years. I have also taught English in China (4 months in 1986), worked for VIPKid (2 years), and taught teachers in my district. I have worked with kids in a multitude of settings from day care to Sunday School at church.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
Yes. The first lesson is very inexpensive. After that, I charge 25 dollars/hour.
How did you get started teaching?
I've always loved working with children and knew I wanted to be a teacher. I've loved my work and have never looked back.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked mostly with students ages 7-10 years old. On VIPKid, however, I had the opportunity to work with students from 4 - 15 years old.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
Last night we went out to dinner to celebrate a friends birthday. The place I chose had live music. We faced the musician and looked out the glass doors behind him to see the sunset. Enjoying the music, good food, and laughter, I felt happy and calm. Connecting with people is most certainly an event I am fond of!
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
It is all about finding a tutor that fits your personality and learning needs. I may not be the tutor for you. I am very energetic, upbeat, and positive. I like to encourage my students and support them any way I can. You might want someone who is calmer and laid back, perhaps.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
1. What are your academic goals? What are your long-term goals?
2. How do you want your tutor to help you? By preparing lessons for you? By helping you with your current assignments?
3. What kind of teacher do you want to work with?
