About

I am a devoted professional. Applied linguistics is all I do! I love language and teaching it in all its aspects—reading, writing, grammar, vocabulary... I have Master's-level credentials and a long resume (over 15 years' experience), but it's my rapport with the students that has built my solid reputation over the years.

Even on the most difficult days, I love being a teacher! What other job allows you to meet such a diversity of people and help them so directly? I love the "aha" moments most of all—when students finally understand the concept. To be part of the process of knowledge is a high and humbling calling.

    Frequently asked questions

I love to get to know a student first. Relationships are the heart of teaching. Students can also detect phoniness—I don't do inauthenticity. I genuinely love to meet people and understand how they think. Are they having a bad day? Is the material not clicking? I want to be sure they are enjoying the lesson as much as I am, and I always enjoy teaching language!

I have a Bachelor's degree in English and a Master's degree in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL).

My rates are determined by subject and location (online vs in-person) but generally range between $35 and $50 per hour.

I moved to South Korea in 2006 to explore the world and stumbled into my life's calling. In the first few weeks of teaching English, I was hooked.

I have worked with students of nearly every nationality. My first six years of teaching were spent with South Korean students, but I taught at several university language programs in Chicago with a wide diversity of ethnicities.

I have also taught nearly all ages, from 2 to 60. I have taught preschool, elementary, middle school, high school, college, adult business and corporate classes, and adult enrichment.

I had my first vacation in many years. I've been working very hard! Spending a week with the family and going to Six Flags Great America are great memories. My four kids won't stop growing up!

Ask a lot of questions! Are they excited by your questions? Maybe a little TOO excited? I had a graduate professor who could not hide her delight at any question we asked about language. That's the difference between tutors who are passionate about their subject and those whose passions lie elsewhere. There's nothing wrong with the latter, but you deserve the best! If you want the best, ask them what they love most about their subject.

Is this Googleable? The best student is an informed and prepared student. Teachers are there to give information, but they're mostly there to help you think through problems that can't be easily solved with a Google search.

Try to also be aware of what strategies you've already tried to get the right answers. The more info you can give about what has been working/not working, the better. Tutors are much like doctors: we need to develop a "history" to best create a program to help you succeed.
