About

My 30 plus years of teaching experience makes my service stand out because I know how to work with all kinds of students in a wide variety of math subjects.

My rates and discounts are based on experience and affordability for families leading to successful results. Students and parents get what they pay for from my efforts!

With the challenges we are now facing, students can schedule online sessions from 9am to 9pm daily using Zoom! During the regular school schedule, meeting students online will allow me to have more flexibility than the competition.

I create positive one-to-one relationships with the teachers of the students I tutor. As a teacher, myself, it is necessary to keep in touch with what is going on in the classrooms of the students I tutor.

I have helped students from 5th grade through college.

I have been tutoring for over three years and enjoy helping students understand and build more confidence in math.

I enjoy preparing material to assist students build confidence in the math they are learning and/or preparing for.

I have been a certified high school math teacher for 30 plus years. I have worked with Excel Edge, Inc. to help students prepare for the PSAT, SAT, and ACT exams for more than 10 years.

I do have a website that is part of my profile.

I highly recommend Mike Fernandez for Math or Test Prep tutoring. I have had all of my kids go to Mike for Math at one time or another and it has absolutely helped them understand concepts that were difficult, helped them get ahead in their classes and raised their grades. It gives me peace of mind to know my child has a scheduled time to meet with Mike so if they are not understanding anything in class, he will be able to clarify for them.
We have also had Mike do test prep with our older kids and again, it’s been extremely beneficial as a supplement to other test prep. Lastly, and probably what makes Mike an excellent tutor is my kids like him and do not complain about going. They know it’s helpful too.
You can’t go wrong with Mike Fernandez as a tutor.

He gave our son the extra one on one time he needed to better understand the lessons versus just memorizing formulas. He went over a above to make sure our son had materials to learn from, gathered them from his own sources as well as the teacher and was proactive with test preparation.

Mike is amazing! He’s always organized and ready to tackle the math curriculum for whatever class my child is taking. He makes the subject approachable while helping to solidify the concepts. My child is a full letter grade higher in math and feels more confident on the subject.

    Frequently asked questions

I talk to them about themselves to build a relationship with them outside of just math.

I find out ahead of time who their math teacher is and reach out to those teachers.  I build positive relationships with the teachers for students to receive consistent instruction and assistance.

I have taught high school math for over 30 years.  My undergraduate work was at Ball State University.  I have a Master's Degree in School Administration from Concordia University.

My current hourly rate is $60 per hour. I do offer a discount to $45 per hour for multiple sessions per week.  I offer a one-time $10 discount for referrals that become regular students.

I started teaching after successfully completing my degree in math education from Ball State University.  I taught for 11 years at Morton East High School, two years at Batavia HS and 13 years at Romeville HS.  I spent one year at St. Joseph HS. I am currently at East Aurora HS. I also have a passion for helping high school students prepare for the PSAT, SAT, and ACT exams.  I also worked for Excel Edge, Inc. for 10 years.

I have worked with students from 5th grade through college.  I have worked with students striving to simply pass a course to those looking to score in the 30s on ACT Math.

Recently, I helped a student raise her GRE Math score from 7 out of 20 to 14 out of 20. This has been in just 3 sessions! I also helped a student raise her ACT math score 3 points in three one-hour sessions so she could be accepted at a college she wanted attend.  A student also raised her SAT math score from 580 to 680 in just 3 sessions. I have recently helped students raise their math grades 1 to 2 letter grades in just a few sessions.

I would suggest that a student ask a prospective tutor what plan he/she has for success. For example, I tell students/parents what we will accomplish each session.  For the ACT prep students, I tell them how we focus on timing and strategies for success on the exam.

One, does the teacher have the experience necessary to help the student be successful?  Two, what is the plan the teacher has for a successful program of sessions? Three, is the teacher comfortable with sites like IXL, Khan Academy and Kuta Software?
