Tony The Tutor
About
I have been an ELA and Social Studies teacher for grades 6-12 for nine years. My passion is to help students of all ages and grade levels accomplish their educational benchmarks and goals. Over the course of my career, I have tutored students with a wide range of skills and backgrounds. Some of my student testimonials include a forty point upswing in their grade in less than three weeks. Others include passing ACT, SAT, and other college entrance exams. And finally, my students showed the highest improvement in state-mandated test for grades 7 and 8.
I consider it an honour to help students reach their potential. As an educator, I have the glorious opportunity to experience this honour on a daily basis. Being an educator doesn't stop when one leaves the classroom, it is a twenty-four hour seven day a week occupation.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
The first thing I do is ascertain where the student's level so that I can develop a personalized learning plan. Afterwards, I move forward with that plan to help the student achieve any goals and benchmarks.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a B.A. in education along with over twenty graduate hours. I have taught in public and private schools during my nine-year teaching career. And, finally, I have worked in the capacity of a youth pastor/counsellor since 1986.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
I generally charge between $30 and $35 per hour depending on the needs of the student and how long the student requires my services.
How did you get started teaching?
I became a certified teacher because I have been teaching in some capacity or another since the age of eighteen. My inspiration for becoming an educator is my late uncle who was an educator, coach, and Civil Rights Activist during the late 50s and 60s.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with students that were labelled special education, low functioning, below average, regular, honors, and advanced. I have worked with this range in grades 6 through 12 in Reading, English Language Arts, Social Studies, History, and middle school math.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
My wife and I are in school where we are learning a new set of skills involving financial management and wealth creation.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
The primary advice I would give the student and/or parents would be to remain coachable and correctable. The student must realize that I am here to help them reach their goals and benchmarks. With that being said it is not my responsibility to do the work for the student.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
The top three questions are:
1) What are my goals?
2) What are my clear expectations from the tutor and what should he expect from me?
3) What am I willing to put into each session with my tutor?
