Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
The first thing I like to do with any new student is just sit down with them and talk about why they are getting a tutor, what their previous experience has been with Chemistry, and most importantly what their short-term and long-term goals are for tutoring.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have been a high school Chemistry teacher for the past 13 years. During that time, I have taught every level of Chemistry that our school offers from general chemistry through AP Chemistry. I hold several Masters degrees including a Master's in Science Education from Northwestern University. I am very passionate about Chemistry and Chemistry education. I feel that while it is one of the less accessible topics in high school science, it is also one of the more rewarding fields to study.
How did you get started teaching?
I originally went to college with the idea that I would go into research. After about a year as a student researcher with the Genetics Professor, I realized that research was not for me. I had loved the tutoring that I had done as an undergrad so I made the decision to go back to school to become a Chemistry teacher. I loved that decision and have never looked back.
