About
I would love to meet your family to see how I can help. I have been tutoring since 2002, helping over 100 students improve their math skills and gain confidence. I consider myself an expert at all HS math. I am a certified Math Teacher with a Master's in Teaching. I am also capable of assisting with reading and essay writing. I absolutely love meeting my students and creating a relationship with them. I want them to learn and grow in their academic endeavors and as a student. I teach each student as an individual, using techniques that work for their learning style. I like to discover what each student has mastered or what they need to improve. I focus on the "why and how" as opposed to memorizing concepts in math. I am able to help all students learn. I work with parents and teachers as needed to support my students. My students do quite well; some have increased SAT scores by 100 points. Please. read my reviews (Tutors.com, Care.com, LinkedIn). I do test prep: SAT, ACT, GED, ASVAB. My Care.com link is provided with 23 reviews. Fun Fact: I am a Retired Army Officer.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
My goal is to give the student confidence. I talk to the parents and students to set goals and find out about learning styles. Sometimes, I communicate with the teacher at the family's request. Then I look at my student's tests and watch him/her do some work to understand the student's thinking processes. Once I have a familiarity with the student's strengths and weakness, I am able to devise a teaching strategy for each student. I work on understanding concepts- why and how - as opposed to memorization. We also do extensive test preparation, which I feel confident about.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a Masters in Teaching Mathematics, BS in Physics from West Point United States Military Academy, and a MS in Engineering from Oregon State University. I taught engineers for three years at West Point, middle school math for two years in Flagstaff, AZ, and filled several high school leave replacement assignments in New York. Additionally, I was an Army officer leading soldiers for 16 years, and a Girl Scout Leader for over 100 Girls.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.

How did you get started teaching?
I had a military assignment teaching cadets at West Point Military Academy and loved it. Upon retirement, I pursued a degree in education.
What types of students have you worked with?
Middle school, high school, college.
Students with IEPs and math anxiety.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
Camping! Swimming! Reading! Watching movies!
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
I suggest you check to see if they have ever been a certified teacher. I would talk to them on the phone/zoom to see if you like their personality. Also, ask for a "trial session."
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Sometime students are not able to articulate what they need help with. It the teacher's job to find out and help the student. A teacher should always be a leader and be able to solicit answers from students.
That said, students should tell teachers about their goals: college, trade school, military? Or the goal might be simply to pass a class. Students should say how they learn best if they know. Do they like watching, listening, doing? They should talk to the tutor and see if they feel comfortable with the tutor.
