About
Tutoring sessions are highly interactive as I engage the student in thoughtful reasoning and analysis. I stretch the student's thinking. And make it enjoyable. I use techniques and methods honed over ten years teaching math to middle school and high school students.
Two aspects of learning are critical: understanding of underlying concepts and good study and test prep skills.
As a tutor, I combine these together to help my students increase understanding and knowledge, improve study habits and build confidence. I am adept at accommodating personal learning styles and communicate often with parents.
I specialize in high school Math subjects and ACT/SAT test prep.
I have the "teacher gene" and love working with young people. I pride myself on doing a nice job of keeping things light and encouraging while making progress toward goals.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I like to start out with personal introductions to establish a rapport and get the student talking and comfortable.
I outline the ground rules: materials, cancellation policy, assignments, communication to parents, format of sessions, etc. and take questions.
I ask a lot of open-ended questions to probe for issues, attitude, strengths and weaknesses in subject matter, accommodations, study habits, personal organization and test-taking skills.
Parents are invited to join for these first ten minutes. For math tutoring, we will start by reviewing a recent test, quiz or homework. Test prep students take a practice test before the first meeting. I use this exercise to assess current skill status and needs.
I encourage the student to take the lead and be responsible for his/her learning and subject matter understanding.
Then, we’re off and running. And we have some fun while we’re at it.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a BS and an MS in Math Education and have taught for 10 years. I've been tutoring test prep and math courses for 5 years.
