Mary Ann's Math And Test Prep Tutoring
About
Test Prep: As an ACT/SAT coach, my goal is student success. My approach is twofold: helping students to review/relearn material that will be on the test, and working with students to understand what strategies will improve their performance. I introduce a variety of test-taking strategies, then we work together to find those that work best for the individual student. I want every student to get his/her best possible score!
Results: Recent student scores have improved from 1 to 10 points on the ACT, with the average of 6 + points. SAT scores have been up by 100-150 points.
Math: As a math tutor, I tutor for understanding. In order to make sense of the material, students need more than the algorithms. I work with math students (middle school and high school) to understand the big ideas as well as solve the assigned problems. As students build their mastery of math, they can tackle more challenging work with less anxiety and more success!
I love working 1-to1 with students and seeing their growth in understanding.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
During our first meeting I try to learn about my student - scores, grades, goals, as well as interests, sports, activities. Then we begin. We either work on some homework problems, or start a test prep section. At the end of the session I encourage students to talk with parent/guardian about whether or not they want to continue to work with me, then let me know. That way the student isn't put in the position of telling me s/he doesn't want to work with me. I'm happy to say that no one has ever chosen not to continue!
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Northwestern University - M.S. ED.
I've taught middle school math and tutored middle school and high school math as well as SAT and ACT test prep for ten years.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
Individual math tutoring sesssions are $60/hour, with discounted packages of lessons available.
Test prep is $2300 including all materials and tutoring of all sections of the test, as well as scoring of 3 practice tests.
How did you get started teaching?
I changed careers and became a teacher fifteen years ago, earning a Master of Science in Education & Social Policy from Northwestern University. Since then I've worked as a teacher, instructional coach and tutor. As the mother of two adult sons, I bring personal as well as professional experience to my work!
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with students with a learning disability in math, students who want to do better than a 30 out of 36 on the ACT, those who need to improve a grade in a neglected math class, and students with test anxiety. I also work with students who need a little more time and attention than their math class and teacher can provide.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I like getting out in nature. I saw a saw whet owl, one of the smallest of all owls, be banded and released one evening in Indiana last fall. It was fascinating!
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
My advice is to find a tutor who knows her subject and has a style and personal demeanor that leaves you feeling comfortable. Your tutoring sessions should leave you feeling accomplished and better prepared for that upcoming class or test.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
What do you think is getting in your way of learning? Do you lack an understanding of the basics? Or is your teacher hard to work with? Do you have trouble paying attention in class? Do you have a chance to ask questions in class? What do you expect from a tutor?
