About

Many of my students have gone from fearing writing or experiencing anxiety about writing to finding pleasure and power in their writing. Critical thinking is what I wish to nurture through writing. I want my students to feel the power of expression, to take pride in writing, and to have confidence in how they craft their message to the world. My students have gone on to write beautiful essays at the University of Chicago, University of Pennsylvania, Columbia University, Cornell, Swarthmore, and many other institutions.

I enjoy working with both empathy and care to tease out the thinker in each student. Watching students develop critical thinking through writing is powerful for them and for me, it can be such an exciting process to watch this happen. Empathic inquiry is how I draw out the thinker in the student. I look forward to working with you or your child.

Frequently asked questions

With a new student, it is necessary to spend part of the first session getting to know the student. It important to assess their learning and communication styles in order to know how to best teach and work together.

My education in writing came from the University of Chicago, which is a university known for its close textual reading and writing tradition.  I am also a professional philosopher and have three posts as a philosopher in residence which require me to write multiple lectures for the public on an annual basis.

I charge $60 per hour.  If it is more or less than an hour, I charge $1 per minute. Please alert me as to what you need in terms of time, I am flexible.

It happened by chance, when I started winning writing awards in high school. When that happened, I started getting requests from the high school to tutor in writing. Classmates also requested help in writing.  Then, I was called by the local community college to become a tutor in philosophy.

I have worked with an extremely diverse population of students. I have worked with students who were extremely anxious or paralyzed by the task of writing, students with distressing college essay deadlines, as well as students for test preparation. I have worked with students for whom English is not their first language.  I have worked with students with learning disabilities.

A student of mine was tasked to design a public arts project and to write out a comprehensive plan on how the project would work. I usually find the assignments that students are given deeply stimulating and exciting. The student came to the tutoring session stating that she had no ideas whatsoever about how to design a public arts project and was worried about the assignment.  As I started asking questions, it became clear, having no ideas was the least of her problems but that brainstorming revealed that she had many wonderful ideas. We discussed the various ideas she had and she wrote up a beautiful public arts program.  She submitted it to her class and the proposal received wonderful feedback. I feel like she felt empowered by the process of developing ideas. This was a lovely experience for both of us.

Compassion, nurturing attention, and empathy are great teachers. We need safety in order to learn well.  I hope you find yourself in a caring environment.
