Reading Is Hard - English Tutoring
About
I view reading and writing as a complex set of skills encompassing everything from spelling and phonetics to critical analysis. Reading and writing are skills that can always be further developed - I become a better reader every time I practice and it is my goal to help you do the same. I provide tutoring in reading and writing for students grades 4-12 and adult English Language Learners. Whether you need assistance mastering the fundamentals or are looking to sharpen your skills, I can help you develop the foundational skills needed to excel. As a child (and even today) I struggled a great deal to learn the basic reading and writing skills that are essential to academic success. With time, practice, and the support of many excellent teachers I've been able to overcome many of the learning challenges I've faced. Learning is a process that never truly ends. There are still aspect of reading and writing with which I struggle, but I find ways to improve every time I practice. My goal is to help you develop the ability to continue improving your reading and writing skills on your own. (I can also offer assistance with math including pre-algebra, algebra 1, and geometry)
I enjoy helping people learn to puzzle out and express complex ideas.
I firmly believe that knowledge is power and that a strong reader can learn most anything.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Typically when I start working with new a student, if they are not currently in school, we spend the first lesson or two reading texts at a variety of reading levels to determine the approximate reading level of the student. From there I will start choosing texts that are challenging but still accessible and engaging for the student. Depending on the student's spelling and grammar we will also practice those skills using workbooks and online resources.
Once we have established what kind of texts we are reading I start giving written assignments - some are assigned to be completed between lessons and some assignments are things on which we work together during lessons. These written assignments start with summarizing the text that we read and progress to responses and eventually to formal essay writing and detailed analysis.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I innitally studied secondary education in college for which coursework included working with students and teachers in Chicago Public Schools. Since college I have tutored with a number of students - most of whom have been adult English Language Learners.
