About

Hello! I've successfully worked with hundreds of high school and college students for 15+ years. I can assist with academic subjects across the Humanities and Social Sciences; with writing (papers and admissions applications); and with College test prep (ACT and SAT). I am a patient, upbeat, and focused tutor, and find it enormously rewarding to help students reach their goals. I work with students, and design their study plans, based on their individual goals and needs.

I've also taught courses in Humanities, Philosophy, and Religious Studies at several Chicago colleges while I pursue my PhD. I was a 99th percentile scorer in both the SAT and the GRE and have previously taught test prep group courses in SAT, GRE, and GMAT.

I know that learning isn't mainly a matter of the expertise of the teacher, but of engaging the learner in the process, so that they become genuinely interested in the material and develop a sense of confidence and competence. I treat each student as an individual and do my utmost to find ways to improve not only their mastery of content, but to help them develop the skills, habits, and confidence that will serve them throughout their years as a student and after.

Please contact me for a free 30 minute phone consultation, during which we can discuss the areas you're looking for tutoring help, your goals, what aspects you find challenging, and the qualities you're looking for in a tutor.

I enjoy working one-on-one with students, and tutoring allows for one-on-one interactions that are dynamic and rewarding. It also lets me adapt my tutoring strategies to each individual student, and keeps me challenged to continually improve my teaching skills and stay current with new methods. I think tutoring requires a substantial element of coaching and find it gratifying to help students develop their internal motivation, so that they're able to focus and engage more fully with the material.

Susan made preparing for the ACT go from daunting to do-able. When I took the test, I surpassed my target score by a point!! Her regular check-ins and detailed weekly study plans kept me motivated and on task. I really enjoyed working with her.

Frequently asked questions

I first like to have a phone consultation with the student to learn more about their goals and what they're finding challenging. This helps us both get a better sense of whether we'll be a good 'fit'. If we are, we'll arrange our first lesson, and I'll ask them to send me any relevant materials (paper prompts, drafts; previous test scores) so I can review this before we first meet.

At the first meeting, we discuss concrete goals, steps for getting there, staying motivated, and set up a study schedule (a shared google doc) so I can follow their progress. After these preliminaries, we get started on the subject at hand!
