I am a university student majoring in Biology who has worked as a part-time English and Mandarin tutor for 4 years now. I also became an ESL teacher (English as Second Langugae) who handled students of various age groups from both Korea and China. A consisten honor student and a university scholar. I am also experienced in public speaking as a former member of our university's debate varsity. I was also the editor-in-chief of our school paper and is knowledgeable in grammar and editing.

Seeing improvement from my students is the most rewarding thing for a tutor like me. I also usually get close with my students which makes class fun and light. Be it a six-year old kid or an adult older than me, I enjoy making conversations with them. Since I get to interact with students of different personalities, I also need to have a different approach with each of them. Finding the right one and establishing a good relationship will follow successful classes which is always a joy for me.

What is your typical process for working with a new student?
For English students, I first evaluate their spoken and written levels by giving materials to read and answer. From there, I customize a lesson plan unique for each student depending on the area they want to focus on (vocabulary, grammar, public speaking, etc.). A routine is made for each session. For the reading and vocabulary course for example, at least ten new English words from a reading material is studied in one session. During the next session, a vocab quiz regarding the previous lesson will be held at the start of the class.
For those studying Science, particularly Chemistry and Biology, a level test will also be provided to evaluate the student's current standing. If he/she is taking these lessons as a follow up for their school's lessons, I will simply follow their class' pacing. If not, I will create our own lesson outline for every session.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I am a BS Biology student majoring in Industrial Biology (Biotechnology) at a prestigious university in the Philippines. We also have chemistry courses each term ranging from General Chemistry to Physical Chemistry. All of our classes and learning materials are conducted in English which made me a fluent speaker.

I charge at $6 per hour for English classes and $8 per hour for Science classes.
How did you get started teaching?
University tuition is very expensive and before becoming a scholar, I wanted to at least earn a bit for my allowance. I started to teach Mandarin to kids studying at Chinese schools and continued on until today.
What types of students have you worked with?
I worked with grade school students as young as 7 years old. I also encountered adults with Chinese clients or married to a Chinese husband. One of my earliest students were doctors who mostly had Chinese patients and wanted to learn basic Mandarin. I also taught English to Korean and Chinese students of different age groups both online and face-to-face.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
For any subject, whether it is English or Science, aside from truly experienced and knowledgeable ones, look for teachers whom you think would be compatible and comfortable for you. Having a gender preference is definitely okay; looking for someone close to your age may help; having the same interests could make you closer. I believe aside from knowledge and experience, personality is also very important.
